Counter-terrorism is in the bag

According to Homeland Security Research Corporation, the homeland security market is growing at an average of 34.3% and is estimated to be worth more than $75 billion annually. To make the most of this new market, a compact backpack for covert monitoring complete with antennas, power supply, communications and local storage has been developed by CRFS, a manufacturer of real-time spectral monitoring and management tools.
The product allows for discreet sweeps of an area by a single person on foot, allowing spectrum users, regulators, law enforcement and intelligence agencies to verify real-time spectrum use and check for anomalous emissions in frequency bands up to 6 GHz. The RFeye backpack system can store results locally for later analysis, or communicate its findings in real time to a control centre anywhere in the world. It can also be remotely controlled and configured if desired.
Dr. Alistair Massarella, CEO of CRFS said, “RFeye units are already making a vital contribution in policing spectrum usage, border monitoring, perimeter protection and counter-terrorism, and the RFeye Backpack will add a key extra capability for our users. The system can be used covertly: there is nothing in the appearance of the backpack that gives any hint as to its purpose. No user intervention is required during the walk around, allowing an area to be surveyed and monitored in an entirely discreet manner.”
The RFeye system is based on one or more distributed, autonomous nodes – fixed or mobile – which can survey the radio spectrum between 10 MHz and 6 GHz. Each RFeye node is a low-cost, robust, GPS-equipped real-time spectrum analyser, which can be linked via a backhaul network such as Wi-Fi, UMTS or GPRS to provide rich and complete contextual information that amounts to a revolution in spectrum monitoring.
The RFeye system includes a range of sophisticated and powerful data management and visualisation tools. Applications for the RFeye system include interference detection, spectrum license enforcement, military and intelligence uses, cell planning, RF environment checks and remote site monitoring.
