DC/DC regulators add to VIN
01 December 2007
Addressing a new generation of FPGAs and ASICs, Linear Techology (www.linear.com) has added to its ìModule family with three DC/DC regulators for the high VIN market.
The LTM8020, LTM8022 and LTM8023 are available now. The LTM8021 will follow in Q1 2008. The LTM80xx series addresses the high voltage market, with 24V and 28V versions for use in industrial and industrial unregulated, medical and the automotive after-market.

Using any of the regulators in the established ìModule series creates room on the back of the PCB; they can be placed on the back and weigh 0.8g to 1.7g, depending on the model. The 200mA LTM8020 package is claimed to be the smallest to date, measuring 6.25mm x 6.25mm x 2.3mm in an LGA (land grid array) package, for a total footprint reduction of 190 per cent, according to Linear’s Don Paulus, because there is no heatsink. It also dissipates 98 per cent less heat through its switch-mode topology. The thin package includes a DC/DC controller IC, power switches, inductor compensation circuitry and input and output bypass capacitors, to not only reduce the overall system profile but also improve airflow and heat removal, Paulus explained. The package can be mounted on the reverse side of a circuit board for digital ICs to be accommodated.
The new regulators can be configured to regulate a negative output voltage for VEE of an operational amplifier, for example. The DC/DC regulators deliver 98 per cent less heat dissipation, credited to their switch-mode topology, compared to a linear regulator circuit.
The reduced footprint makes them suitable for systems based on the new generation of FPGAs and ASICs; i.e. below -1V, 1V and 1.2V as well as 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V inputs. Input voltage ranges from 4V to 36V (LTM8020) and 3.6V to 38V for both the LTM8022 and LTM8023. The LTM8020’s output can be adjusted with just one resistor from 1.25V to 5V. The LTM8022 and LTM8023 outputs can be adjusted between 0.8V to 10V and are packaged in 11.25mm x 9mm x 2.8mm pin compatible housings.
In Q1, the company will also add a 500mA, 3.6V to 36V input model, with 0.85V to 5V output in a 6.25mm x 11.25mm x 2.8mm.
