Analogue raises its profile

01 August 2006

Anglia (www.anglia.com) has signed an agreement with microcontroller and analogue semiconductor manufacturer Microchip (www.microchip.com) to distribute the latter’s analogue and ICs in the UK and Ireland. Talks began over six years ago, confides Steve Rawlins, Anglia’s CEO and represents the first
major analogue line for Anglia.

The importance of analogue for today’s designers is confirmed by Rawlins who maintains that for each $3 spent on digital $1 is spent on analogue and that the analogue element is increasing contributing to low power consumption in microprocessors. For Microchip, the agreement is evidence of its push into Europe and Anglia’s technical support and rapid response to enquiries and orders are cited as particularly important to the Arizonabased company. Microchip’s Ken Millar says 'Anglia has an enviable reputation in both these areas, as well as a complementary product range…’

The companies have launced the Analog2go.com website, hosted by Anglia, which can be used to source samples from Microchip’s analogue range. Samples can be ordered online and are supplied from Anglia’s
UK warehouse. Millar explains ‘..not all engineers immediately think of us when choosing complementary analogue components [for eight and 16bit microcontrollers]…the Analog2go service provides support to this
important part of our product range.’ Microchip’s analogue semiconductor range includes thermal and power management devices, switching regulators, charge pump DC/DC converters, power MOSFE drivers and battery management ICs.

Anglia’s technical team will help with reference designs as well as specific design problems, such as optimising power consumption through power management circuitry. The two companies point out that redesigning the analogue circuit requires far less development time and resources than changing
the micro.
