Spartan devices complete holistic DSP
01 May 2007
Xilinx (www.xilinx.com) has released two Spartan DSP FPGAs to complete a portfolio of XtremeDSP products with the Virtex-5 SXT and Virtex-4 SX FPGAs, currently shipping. The Spartan 3sD3400A device is the first to be released. It is sampling now, with full production by the year-end. It provides
30GMACs and is priced at just under $45. The 20GMAC 3SD1800A is priced at just under $30. Virtex FPGAs are the high-end, high performance DSP devices, with 100GMACs.
The use of dedicated DSP blocks creates a lower power budget. In-house figures report an average of 50 per cent less dynamic power. The 3SD3400A has 30GMACs and 2200Mbit/sec memory bandwidth. The 3SD1800A has over 20GMACs and 1500Mbit/sec memory. Both have the XtremeDSP architecture as a core, which supports connecting multiple XtremeDSP slices to form a wide math function, DSP filters and arithmetic functions without using a general logic fabric. This also contributes to the reduction in the power consumption through efficient silicon use.
The DSP platform, a combination of the XtremeDSP slice and the Spartan-3A, delivers up to 53,712 logic cells, 2268Kbit of performance-enhanced block RAM and 373Kbit of distributed RAM.
A suite of development tools, release 9.1i, is also available with Xilinx System Generator for DSP and AccelDSP synthesis software support.
