RF detection prepares for 4G

07 February 2008

In terms of RF for wireless applications, Linear Technology (www.linear.com) is looking one step ahead, beyond 3G and on to 4G, with its LT5570 precision RMS [root, mean, square) signal detector.

James Wong, manager, high frequency products, Linear Technology

This is the first RMS detector introduced by the company, which has a heritage of peak Schottky detectors.

The LT5570 is for all 3G and 4G wireless applications, explains James Wong, product manager, high frequency products, Linear, as well as for WiMAX, digital video broadcast, cable networks and microwave links. In next-generation basestations, WiMAX and HSDPA (high speed packet downlink access) all stretch modulation signals, making them more complex.

The problem facing designers is how to measure peaks accurately. Wong points out that next-generation basestations, WiMAX and HSPDA use OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplex) with high signals compared to average power. He believes The LT5570 is the answer to accurate measurement. It can also be used to control power in optical networks, for instrumentation as well as for secure, public safety radios and military and aerospace communications.

It provides accurate power measurement, independent of high crest factor modulated signals and operates at between 40MHz to 2.7GHz, sufficient to cover GSM and UMTS, WCDMA and WiMAX bands. This feature enables the signals to retain the power specified by the carrier. It delivers fast responses of 200nsec rise time and 8µsec fall time, for real-time power response, and low ripple. The regulator can operate with 50dB dynamic range, for high-accuracy at high temperatures. Accuracy is +/-0.5dB at operating temperatures of -40°C up to 85°C. The ability to measure accurately and quickly and the ability to change at full power, will enable basestations to maintain the signal.

It is supplied in a 3mm x 3mm DFN package.
