Embedded regulators are up to 14A

At last week’s PCIM in Nuremberg, International Rectifier announced an addition to its SupIRBuck family.

The single output integrated PoL (point of load) DC/DC voltage IR380x regulator can be used in desktop PCs, graphics cards, games consoles, LCD TVs and set-top boxes up to 14A.
There are six versions of the regulator available. Each integrates the high-performance control ICs, optimised with HEXFET MOSFETs in a 5mm x 6mm power QFN package, measuring 0.9mm in profile, which is claimed to enable up to 70 per cent space savings, compared to discrete solutions. The thermally-enhanced package can be mounted on the reverse of the motherboard for additional space savings. The package also enables no-air flow operation without a heatsink below 10A, to further save real estate.
The voltage regulators are designed for 4A, 7A and 12A of output load current at 600kHz and 6A, 9A and 14A at 300kHz, respectively. The input range is 2.5V to 21V and output ranges form 0.6V to 12V. Features include pre-bias start-up, a choice of two fixed switching frequencies, hiccup current limit, thermal shutdown and precise output voltage regulation.
The level of integration accounts for the small footprint and helps to reduce overall system costs. The use of discrete components provides more flexibility than traditional implementations, claims the company.
