A Stirling way to improve health

Funky Moves of Stirling, Scotland has developed Funky Cones which use a wireless control box and is designed to improve agility, memory, and co-ordination to alleviate childhood obesity and assist army training.
Essentially, Funky Cones is four or more different coloured cones linked to a control box that operates a programme of flashing lights and sounds that are emitted by the cones. An interactive running game is just one application for this product, as the cones encourage remembering a sequence of flashing lights that
dictates a course.
The concept of Funky Cones stemmed from Klinnert’s concern for the growing number of physically inactive and obese children. A wireless prototype necessitated the development of a PCB as well as embedded
software so that the product could be demonstrated. A prototype was piloted at Stirling Primary School and a SMART Scotland Award, granted by the Scottish Executive, soon followed.
The design was refined with the help of iSLI (Institute for System Level Integration), which has an in-house system architecture design, hardware/software co-design, mixed-signal design, embedded software, FPGAs, IC design, and MEMS technology design team, and an EDSS (Scottish Enterprise Grant).
