IP phones mean business

An application-enabled desktop SIP phone has a colour display, HD voice technology and GbitE connectivity.

This Polycom SoundPoint IP 670 desktop phone uses Texas Instruments’ DSP technology with Polycom’s software to support HD voice and advanced IP features for small and medium business users. The phone was unveiled at NXTComm08, in Las Vegas and is claimed to bring lifelike communications to business desktop IP phones with high-definition voice and SIP (session initiation protocol) features.

SIP is a 3GPP signalling protocol for multimedia communications over the internet. In a business environment it can be used to stream multimedia or video conferencing as well as presence information. It can create and modify unicast (two-party) or multicast communications with several media streams.

The SoundPoint IP670 has GbitE (Gigabit Ethernet) connectivity, high-definition voice technology and a colour display for business users to conduct remote meetings anywhere in the world. The IP phone market is expected to grow as global communications requirements increase and companies update networks for IP for data and voice. Last year, IP lines represented 40 per cent of line shipments deployed.

It also supports what is claimed to be the industry’s first colour expansion module. Up to three can be used for call handling and to manage incoming calls by being able to show presence status without the call attendant having to be in front of a PC.

It supports up to six lines as well as shared lines, text messaging and buddy presence monitoring. There are 14 default colour background displays for phone personalisation. Other backgrounds can be added, such as a company logo, to customise the phone.

Texas Instruments’ DSP technology and VoIP platforms have been used with Polycom’s IP phones for some time. TI has voice silicon and software for IP phones, enterprise VoIP gateways and carrier class equipment.

The PoE (power over Ethernet) version of the SoundPoint IP 670 is available now through Polycom channel partners.
