A Li-Ion/Li-Polymer charger with AC-DC adapter or USB-port battery charging facility can power devices.

Microchip Technology has announced the launch of the MCP73871 charge-management controller. This Li-Ion/Li-Polymer charger has what the company calls an ‘intelligent charge management feature’ that enables simultaneous AC-DC-adapter or USB-port charging and powering of devices.
The single-chip 20pin, 4mm x 4mm QFN-package charger features an integrated pass transistor (eliminating the need for an external FET), and numerous battery and termination-voltage options. Voltage regulation of 0.5 per cent means that the new charger can extend battery life by allowing the battery to be charged close to its optimal limit.
According to the manufacturer, the MCP73871 charge-management controller is suitable for portable consumer products, such as GPS units, phone chargers, cameras, PDAs, and Bluetooth headsets.
An evaluation board (MCP73871EV) is also available to enable designers to use the new charger in their designs.
