Satellite sensors seek images
26 August 2008
The European Space Agency’s Sentinel-3 earth observation satellite will use CCD image sensors from e2v.
The satellite, which is to be launched in 2012, will be used to study seas’ surfaces, and surface temperatures on land and sea, as well as ocean and land colour for earth observation to contribute to future environmental policies.
The satellite will carry a radar altimeter and a multi-channel optical imaging instrument as well as the CCD image sensors from e2v. The CCD55-20 sensors are back-illuminated frame transfer CCD image sensors, optimised, according to the company for hyperspectral imaging. They use a ‘gated drain dump’ which allows the readout of elected image lines and the dumping of unwanted data. It also has graded thickness, and anti-reflection coating to minimise reflection from the silicon surface.
