Amplifiers for HD multimedia

High-performance amplifiers claim to deliver sharper images in HD multimedia applications.

Analog Devices has introduced three video amplifiers to their Advantiv range. The ADA4420-6 video filter, the compact ADA4855-3, and ADA4856-3 triple, rail-to-rail output video amplifiers claim to address demand for HD content in multimedia products ranging from 1080p HDTVs and HD home theatre systems to professional and industrial video applications.

The ADA4855-3 and ADA4856-3 provide single-supply, rail-to-rail operation with greater flexibility for passing a wide range of signals, while reducing system cost and complexity. The devices drive a 150Ω load with 0.01% differential gain error, 0.01° differential phase error and 0.1dB flatness out to 63MHz and 85MHz, respectively. In addition, the ADA4855-3 offers a wide 400MHz to 3dB bandwidth at gain of 1, while the ADA4856-3 delivers 220MHz at a fixed gain of 2. Using a single 5V power supply, the ADA4855-3 and ADA4856-3 consume 7.7mA per amplifier, while delivering up to 40mA of load current, and on-chip power-down features reduce the supply current to 1mA.

The ADA4420-6 video filter offers HDTV and HD component video subsystem engineers advanced performance, flexibility and power efficiency. By integrating a number of buffers, discrete components and six independent filter channels – three for SD (Y/C, CVBS) and three for HD component (YPbPr or RGB) signals – the ADA4420-6 offers designers a single-chip that supports HD, SD, S-Video, and composite video signals. With resolution up to 1080i, the new video filter is said to be suitable for HD consumer applications or for use as a reconstruction filter at the digital-to-analogue outputs of video encoders. The ADA4420-6’s 0.197in x 0.158in 16pin QSOP size reduces board space requirements by 85% over traditional video amplifiers configured as filters, reduces the bill of materials by 50% and reduces design time for products including set-top boxes, DVD players and recorders. The ADA4420-6 drives two parallel 75Ω loads while providing 1dB flatness out to 30MHz typical, and HD rejection of -35dB at 75MHz. In addition, the new video filter has 10nanoseconds maximum group delay and provides 0.19% differential gain and 0.76° differential phase. The ADA4420-6 operates on a single 5V power supply and offers a power-saving disable feature that reduces the supply current to less than 8μA when the device is not in use.

The ADA4855-3 and ADA4856-3 are designed to work over the extended temperature range of −40°C to +105°C. The ADA4420-6 operates in the extended industrial temperature range of −40°C to +85°C.
