Chip fuses get smaller

Overcurrent protection for high-temperature applications

As devices get smaller and smaller, circuit protection has to reduce in size to continue to provide safety for consumers. Tyco Electronics launched a new line in fast reacting fuses for high current use helping provide overcurrent protection on power supplies, servers, communications equipment, voltage regulator modules and other space-constrained applications.
The surface mount chip fuse offers strong arc suppression characteristics and some of the highest current ratings available in the industry-standard 1206 form factor.
The fuse's monolithic, multilayer design enhances high temperature performance and contributes to the high inrush current withstanding capability.
"The new high-current chip fuse complements and expands Tyco Electronics' line of overcurrent protection devices," said Steven Deffley, global product manager, Fuse Line. "This small form factor device can help designers optimise board space requirements in high-current, high-temperature applications."
The devices are available on 178 mm diameter reels for compatibility with high-volume assembly methods.
Key device parameters for the high-current fuse include:
* Rated current values up to 20 A with voltage ratings up to 24 VDC
* Operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C
* 100 A interrupt rating at rated voltage
* Some of the highest I2t values available in the 1206 form factor, and
* Halogen free and RoHS compliant.
