Solid state relays

Silent operation and no moving contacts improves switching speed.

The benefit of Solid-State Relays (SSRs) over electro-mechanical relays is their silent switching. Electro-mechanical relays can be noisy, clicking on and off in applications where frequent switching is required. Especially in applications where hundreds of relays are used, the resultant noise can be considerable and objectionable. Environmentally friendly SSRs have no moving contacts and therefore run totally silently. Meeting this demand for relays with a high switching speed and long electrical life, Hongfa’s solid state HFS32 plug in relay is available from specialist distributor Switchtec. Aimed at designers, system integrators (automation and processing equipment), panel builders (H&V) and OEMs, the relays can be used for PLC interface and process control applications.
Suitable for controlling 2 A, 48-440 VAC (AC version) and 5 A, 0.1-57.6 VDC (DC version), the HFS32 series is able to withstand a maximum surge current of up to 80 A (depending on type) making the relays suited for high inrush or inductive applications.
The HFS32 series is available with DC control voltages of 5 V (4-6 VDC), 12 V (9.6-14.4 VDC), 24 V (19.2-28.8 VDC) and 60 V (48-72 VDC). All types are zero cross turn on to minimise electrical interference. Random turn on versions are also available.
For use in different applications, the HFS32 is available in two styles, a horizontal version measuring 29x15.7x12.7 mm and a vertical version measuring 28x15x5 mm. The relays feature PCB style pins, enabling them to be mounted directly on to a PCB (without the need for a PCB socket) or due to their industry standard footprint they can be plugged into DIN rail sockets. The horizontal version can be plugged into the Hongfa 14FF-2Z-C3 DIN socket that features an ejector retaining and release clip for easy deployment of the relay. Identification tag and further LED indication can be added with the use of Hongfa plug in modules.
The vertical version can be plugged into the Hongfa 41F-1Z-C2 DIN socket which also features a built in ejector retaining and release clip, and includes identification tag and LED indication, all in a 6 mm wide housing. As SSRs do not have any moving contacts, that are ideally suited to applications with high switching levels or rapid switching times. Comparing the HFS32 series with its electro-mechanical version (the HF115F), the HFS32 has an operating time of 50 μs, compared to 15 ms.
Hongfa HFS32 series relays can be supplied on their own for OEM applications for direct PCB or plug in mounting, however Switchtec also market them pre-assembled in sockets, as part of its RM range of Interface Module Relays. Traditionally relays of this size and shape (an industry standard size) were limited to electro-mechanical relays. Hongfa has called on its large knowledge pool in relay manufacturing and development to develop an SSR range that utilises the mechanical size benefits (versatility, familiarity, changeability etc) of these relays, but has the added benefits of solid-state circuitry.
Indeed, the HFS32 is an evolutionary development in Hongfa’s solid-state relay range. Having an almost complete SSR range of surface and PCB mount relays, Hongfa is now focusing on DIN rail and plug in variants of SSRs. Hongfa’s HFS32 series is available ex-stock from Switchtec who are able to provide a sales and technical support for them, and indeed all its stocked products.
