Event of the season
09 June 2009
The electronics design community has long been suffering due to a lack of events and exhibitions that truly encompass the electronics industry. Will National Electronics Week turn this all around?
Kriti Kohli, the new technical editor at EPD, wrote this week’s comment.
The UK electronics design community hasn’t really had any show to call its own previously, but things seem to be looking up. With National Electronics Week, the electronics industry is trying to see off the challenges from the past year, and move forward as a consolidated entity. Whilst the show aims to be an all-encompassing event, design engineers will benefit substantially from attending. This is NEW’s second year running and it is trying to differentiate itself from previous events by actively trying to attract the design community and create a new platform aimed across the board at various industry sectors rather than being purely manufacturing.
The driving force behind NEW’s new format is the need for better communication in the industry, both internally and externally. Therefore, this year’s event introduces something for individual industry sectors, namely: test and measurement, photonics and lasers, solar and green design, production and assembly, embedded, EMS, wireless, design and development, and components. NEW promoters believe that this introduction of clearly defined areas for design and components will reduce last year’s perceived dominance of production equipment. Moreover, the addition of conferences and seminars to disseminate information amongst design professionals give the event a training and education feel to it.
Electronics design engineers will be interested in the UK Design Innovation Conference - three “tracks” of technical sessions over the three days. These tracks cover subjects associated with Advanced PCB Technologies, Intermediate PCB Design Techniques and Design Considerations beyond the PCB. Speakers from Analytical Edge, Polar Instruments, Stokes Research Institute, XJTAG and Premier EDA Solutions are currently lined up for the event.
Additional seminars will be held through the EWLive Design Conference, which will focus on ‘design methodologies and product technologies and the intention is to showcase topical design innovation in semiconductors and software.’ Embedded processor system design, power efficient design, and wireless system design will be the main topics at these seminars with speakers from Microchip, Altera, NI, Vicor, Xilix, Fairchild, Freescale, Agilent and Cypress among others.
For those interested in business development, government regulations, technology partnerships and grants, and business opportunities, there are the State-of-the-ART seminars, which will provide a good market overview and discuss future innovations.
Almost 200 companies have signed up to exhibit at the event being held at Earl’s Court in London over 16-18 June 2009. Given that some events in the electronics industry have been disappointing in the past, the NEW show might change all that.
All the EPD team will be at the show so if you would like to meet up with Esther Waite (Advertising Manager), Tim Fryer (Managing Editor) or me, Kriti Kohli, please drop me an email and we can sort out a suitable time.
