Time to take pride of place

14 July 2009

With scant days left, now is the time to show how your company takes its responsibilities seriously by entering the e-Legacy Awards.

Tim FryerThis is unashamedly a two-pronged attack. Last week the EPD team contacted many suppliers to the electronics industry as they are often the ones best placed to publicise notable projects. However, it is often you, their customers and our readers, who are the ones involved in the projects themselves.

Our e-Legacy awards are now in their third year and have clearly struck a chord with an industry more interested in projects rather than products and components. ‘Projects’ can cover the way a company operates and contributes as much as what it directly produces – and the e-Legacy Awards are intended to those companies that contribute something to employees, society, their local environment or the environment in general, and not just assessing everything on a direct profit or loss basis.

Not that I am convinced that there is such a thing as pure altruism, everybody has a reason for their actions and the same is true of companies. And I am sure the truth is that most people would rather do business with an ethical company that ensured its employees were happy and well-trained, and possibly even who contributed further to the society around them. It is almost as if that company has proclaimed itself to have a moral code that allows is customers and clients to be comfortable working with. Maybe it is as simple as portraying a trustworthy image.

However, without appearing pious it is not always easy for such companies to show what they are doing, which is where the e-Legacy Awards come in. These Awards are intended to highlight the companies that do take their ‘corporate responsibilities’ seriously and are an inspiration to other to follow suit.

In the coming months I will be asking you to take a look at our website and vote for the best projects, but in the meantime there are still two weeks to enter (closing date is 25th July 2009). There are seven categories: Investment in Education, Medical Advances Award, Investment in the Environment Award, Environmental Design Award, Investment in Training Award, Contribution to Security Award, and Contribution to Sustainability Award. A full description of these categories and the simple and quick entry procedure can be found HERE .

Entry is free and winners will be announced at a gala lunch in Central London in early November.

So if you think you or your company deserves a bit of recognition for what you do, now is the time to take pride of place!
