The road from Prizes to Productronica
04 November 2009
Pulses are racing in the EPD offices this week as we build up to our big event of the year, the e-Legacy Awards.
The event is actually being held today (4 November) in central London and as you read this the chances are that the team will be making the last minute preparations. Unfortunately the timing dictates that I can’t bring you news of the winners, but I will bring you a full roll of honour in this column next week.
Fortunately I will be able to write that in advance (I am sure I will start writing as soon as the last party balloon has been popped!) as I will be spending next week, once more, in the delightful surrounds of the Munich exhibition centre. This year it is Productronica – Electronica’s ‘spare rib’ when it was spun off in the 70s. It obviously has its own direction in serving the manufacturing side of the electronics industry, but it still has considerable interest for electronics designers too.
Many designers do have to consider broader issue – how a product is going to be made and how it will migrate from design, through NPI, to full production. The designer with this level of influence will find much interest at Productronica. And despite the proliferation of EMS companies and focus areas on certain emerging technologies, I think the main area of interest will be in test equipment. There is a growing trend to try and establish test strategies at the design stage and then be able to use equipment, fixtures and programmes through all stages of the product’s life cycle, and standards like PXI and LXI are making this easier than ever before. It is therefore no surprise to see virtually all of the major test vendors featured on the Productronica exhibitor list.
I will be there all week (the show is on from 10-13 November) and my sister magazine, Electronics Manufacture & Test, ran a number of articles that may be of interest to those still toying with the idea of taking a trip to the Bavarian capital and here are few relevant links: Its Big, its Bavarian…and its BACK! (show introduction); Getting to Productronica (travel in and to Munich); Munich after trade fair closing time (where to eat, drink and entertain); and Hot topics (details on the CEO round table). You will find much more on www.EMTWorldWide.com.
