A 5U platform with up to 16 cores and 10 Gbit/s switching for maximum performance and data throughput.

Kontron has introduced the compact MicroTCA platform OM6040D, which is specifically designed for up to four high-end AdvancedMCs. It features a 10 Gbit/s Ethernet switched backplane enabling high data flow rates.
In the maximum configuration with 4x Kontron AM5030 processor modules, the 5U platform hosts up to 16 Intel Xeon processor cores and 96 GB of RAM. This means that the compact and modular 42HP / 5U MicroTCA platform is suitable for applications with demands on performance and data throughput.
Applications in these spaces will benefit from the densely-packed, parallel processing power of up to four high-performance double-with AMC modules, like the Kontron AM5030 and the high-speed fabric of 10GbE on the backplane.
Target applications can be found in embedded markets with a high demand for processing capacity, high communication bandwidth and high availability; such as communications (data conversion and encryption), energy (smart grid infrastructure), industrial automation (high-speed video processing for quality control), medical (diagnostic applications with sophisticated image-enhancement techniques) as well as military and aerospace (radar towers).
The Kontron MicroTCA platform OM6040D is based on a compact chassis (266mm x 428mm x 365mm) which provides four double-width slots for AdvancedMC modules (up to 80 watts) and one slot for the MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH). The OM6040D comes in a cost-optimised design with two pluggable AC/DC power supply units, integrated power management and fan control on the backplane. The fans are housed in a removable fan tray, which is easily accessible from the front for maintenance.
Equipped with Kontron AdvancedMC modules, OEM customers are able to obtain pre-validated application-ready platforms from Kontron at any time and from a single source, which drastically reduces time-to-market. Dedicated modules for the platforms are the Kontron MicroTCA Carrier Hub AM4910, which supports 10 GbE Ethernet switching and modules such as the Kontron AdvancedMC processor module AM5030 (Intel Xeon processor LC5518) or the Kontron AdvancedMC processor module AM5010 (Intel Core 2 Duo). The AMC slots can also accommodate the Kontron AdvancedMC storage module AM5500 (one with every AMC processor) with up to 1 terabyte of storage capacity via either two 2.5in SATA HDDs or robust SDDs. Further customer-specific AdvancedMC implementations using the 10 GbE, 1 GbE, PCIe x4 and SATA supporting backplane can be achieved by Kontron on request.
The new MicroTCA platform OM6040D is available now and will be demonstrated at electronica 2010.
