Do you want 3D?
07 June 2011
When something new and shiny comes out, there always seems to be a crowd of people that have already adopted it. But it hasn’t quite been that way for 3D TV yet.

Electronics vendor and retailer Kogan has realised this and so it is asking its customers what they want by openly discussing the cost of 3D technology. Based on reactions from the UK public, the company will decide whether or not to create a 3D TV in 46in – 55in sizes.
However, judging by a story in this week's newsletter (Global 3D TV shipments soar by nearly 500% in 2011), it seems that consumers have already made up their minds.
According to a message on Kogan's blog:
We have previously discussed that there are some limitations of 3D TV, such as the lack of 3D content. However, we have recently noticed that more and more customers are asking about 3D TV on the Kogan blog and on Facebook and Twitter.
As our business grows, and the price of 3D technology comes down, we're now approaching a position where we can create a TV with the 3D feature for not much more than the cost of one of our existing LED TVs.
We’d be looking at a price increase of approximately £50-£80 in the 46in to 55in sizes. These would be LED TVs using Samsung panels.
There still isn’t much 3D content available, but we’ve also noticed a significant increase in 3D gaming. Unlike the big brands, we won't just lump 3D into most of the TVs in our range and make everyone pay for it, even if they don't want that feature.
Sticking to our promise of creating and delivering exactly what our customers want, we’re going to let you, our customers, decide if we should create a 3D TV.
So do you want Kogan to create a 3D TV? Are you happy with the current range of industry-leading LED TVs? Or would you pay a premium for a 3D LED TV, to use for gaming or to be prepared for when more content arrives? How refreshing to see openness and evidence of a company listening to what people want, rather than telling them what they need.
