Encouraging the engineers of tomorrow
08 August 2011
One of the main challenges for the electronics industry, or any other engineering discipline for that matter, is to attract the youngest and brightest children.

So it is encouraging to see the upcoming Worldskills 2011 competition is expected to be the largest event of its type with an estimated 150,000 visitors.
Worldskills 2011 will be hosted at ExCel in London from 5-8 October and will provide a platform for 1,000 young people from over 50 nations to compete in 45 skills covering engineering and arts.
Wordskills has attracted support from many major technology companies, both as sponsors like Cisco and Samsung, and as official suppliers such as Altium who will provide its Altium Designer to the fourteen competing teams in the electronics category.
As well as the competition, Worldskills will provide an area for a Showcase event that gives 100 schools, colleges, training organisations and community groups from across the UK the chance to become part of an International Showcase.
There will also be ‘Have a Go’ events, both at Excel and in other locations around the country. ‘Have a Go’ subjects include building a burglar alarm, building a circuit board and building and testing your own Lego robot.
Worldskills is offering resources, the chance to badge relevant events and publicity opportunities for both existing and new events. This sounds like an excellent opportunity to get some publicity for your own company while giving young people the chance to have fun trying technology. There are also bursaries available to encourage schools to attend.
Worldskills is an event that is hosted in locations around the world every two years. This is the first time that it has been held in the UK for over 20 years. Competitions and challenges are a great way to capture the interest of children. Would it not be great if we could have a national competition like this every year to get more children involved in technical subjects?
