The European Commission has announced its biggest funding package to date, which is intended to create jobs and foster a lead in technology markets.

The €7 billion under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), is expected to create around 174,000 jobs in the short-term and nearly 450,000 jobs and around €80 billion in GDP growth over the next 15 years.

A breakdown of the funding shows many subjects of interest to the electronics industry, particularly in the areas of health and sustainable energy. The funds will be divided between innovation, academic research and supporting activities that will bridge the gap between research and the market. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) will also be given special incentives to participate.

Over €1 billion will be reserved for network and service infrastructures, in nano and micro-systems, photonics and robotics, in digital content and language technologies and for applications such as ICT for health as well as energy-efficiency.

An additional €488 million for nanotechnologies will focus on areas such as factories of the future, green cars and energy efficient buildings. Research and innovation for cleaner, safer and more efficient transport and mobility will get €313 million.

It’s really great to see the EU promoting and fostering innovation, especially when a good proportion of the budget is dedicated to technology. Any company that operates in the areas above shouldn’t miss out.
